Dentists in Central London

Central London covers Westminster, Kensington and Chelsea and the City of London: 363 practices in three boroughs, including the Harley Street cluster and most of the city’s specialist and cosmetic clinics. It is the most expensive part of London to see a dentist, and by some distance the hardest place to find NHS care.

Central London is the most expensive part of the city

A hygienist appointment costs £138 here against £83 in East London. A root canal is £746 against £400. For routine work the same treatment costs roughly two-thirds more in central London than at the cheaper end of the city, and much of that is the postcode rather than anything clinical.

Where the premium does buy something is specialist work. The concentration of endodontists, periodontists and implant surgeons around Harley Street is real, and for a complex case that expertise is worth travelling for. For a scale and polish, it is not.

The three boroughs are not the same

• Westminster has 256 practices, more than any other borough in London. It is also the dearest place in the city for a hygienist appointment, at a median of £140.
• Kensington and Chelsea has 72 practices and a hygienist median of £130.
• City of London has 35 practices, most of them geared to office workers, and the highest average Google rating of any borough in London at 4.80. Whitening runs to a median of £477.

Central London practices average 4.72 out of 5 on Google, the highest of any region. That partly reflects genuine quality and partly reflects who is leaving the reviews.

NHS dentistry is scarce here

Only 51 of the 363 central London practices hold an NHS contract. That is 14%, against 53% in East London. The City of London has exactly one.

If you want NHS treatment and live or work in central London, you will probably be registering somewhere else.
